The Five Stages of Vision Casting

The video re-highlighted some of our past accomplishments, and then it spelled out the vision in detail, as well as how much it would cost to fulfill the vision. So, what does effective vision-casting look like? How do you cast vision in such a way that people want to join you in the journey to a better future? We recently completed of a major two-year vision initiative at 7 City Church. To create the engagement necessary to see the vision move forward, I communicated the vision in five stages. Too many business leaders try to climb the ladder of success only to find it’s leaning on the wrong building.

Undoubtedly, every business owner is reaching for different things. You aren’t going to want the same things out of life or your business as the next small biz owner. Create a collage or vision board – Gather up lots of magazines, art materials, some glue and scissors, and put the words and images that illustrate your vision on a poster board. For example, if you see a problem that exists on a given outstanding checks, remind your stakeholders that your goal of the change you will implement is to eliminate the pain in question. If you have ten to twenty of these in your tool-belt, you are ready in-season and out for a multitude of situations that will arise from week to week. Doubtless you will share others as you prepare each week, but these will keep you ready always.

Should we look for signs and miracles in church?

Paul spoke with the conviction that this was God’s will. Vision-casting is giving an encouraging word to fellow disciples in a way that will remind them of God’s heart to work in them and through them. It builds faith in them to act in alignment with how God is acting. It does not incite them to act in a way that is contrary to God and His Word. The element of the three-thirds process I am most often asked about is vision-casting. These five stages of vision-casting can be used anytime you’re introducing people to a bigger and brighter future. But they also require you to be extraordinarily intentional. At each vision-casting meeting, I announced the date that we would publicly share the vision. I also announced that we would engage our congregation in a two-year generosity initiative to raise the money to see the vision fulfilled. I provided a specific dollar amount, and I acknowledged that it was the biggest and most significant vision we had ever pursued as a church.

While structure and process are helpful, it is easy to fall into the traps of timeline bloat and iteration loops. If teams aren’t careful, by the time a vision is finally finished, they may miss their window of opportunity for the vision to be relevant. Vision is only useful if an organization is moving towards it, and that can’t happen if it is still stalled in procedure. That said, this is a common challenge and should be anticipated. With a bit of effective planning, watchful management, and using effective techniques like vision workshops and listening sessions, this can be avoided. The vision casting process delivers a better finished product.
